What employing a bookkeeper actually costs
The honest comparison is not our price against a bookkeeper’s salary, it is our price against salary plus the employer’s share of payroll. A bookkeeper in Ontario earns a median of $28.50 an hour. At full-time hours that is what one costs you in a year:
| Salary$28.50/hour median, 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks | $55,575 |
| Employer CPP5.95% of earnings above the $3,500 exemption, 2026 rate | $3,098 |
| Employer EI1.4 times the employee premium, 2026 rate | $1,268 |
| CPP2Does not apply below the $74,600 ceiling | $0 |
| Ontario Employer Health TaxPrivate-sector employers are exempt under $1,000,000 of Ontario payroll | $0 |
| Total, one bookkeeper | $59,942/year |
| Standard package$800 a month, unlimited transactions | $9,600/year |
Two things that comparison leaves out, in both directions. An employee sits in your office and does whatever you ask, which a bookkeeping package does not; and the figure above excludes vacation and sick coverage, a desk, a QuickBooks licence, and the cost of the work stopping when that person leaves. What it does not do is inflate the number. Competing pricing pages often add a flat 25–35% for “benefits and source deductions”; the real statutory employer cost at this salary is $4,367, about 7.9%, because Ontario exempts employers with payroll under $1,000,000 from Employer Health Tax.

What moves the price
Four things change a bookkeeping quote. None of them is how long the work takes, which is why there is no hourly rate on this page.
How many accounts need reconciling
Two bank accounts and a credit card is routine. Six accounts, a line of credit, Stripe, Shopify and a US dollar account is a different month's work, and it is the main thing that moves you from Starter to Standard.
Whether the books are current
Catching up eighteen months of unreconciled transactions is a one-time project, not monthly bookkeeping, and it is quoted separately. Standard absorbs up to three months. Beyond that we look at the file first and give you a fixed number before starting.
Payroll
Running payroll means source deductions calculated every cycle, PD7A remittances on schedule, T4s in February and an ROE whenever someone leaves. It is included on Enterprise and quoted per employee otherwise.
How many entities
A holding company and an operating company are two sets of books, two HST accounts and intercompany entries that have to agree. Multi-entity work is Enterprise, not a surcharge on Standard.
