How does HST work in Ontario?

Ontario's Harmonized Sales Tax combines the federal GST (5%) and the provincial PST (8%) into a single 13% tax applied at the point of sale.

HST for Business Owners

Once your business exceeds $30,000 in revenue over four consecutive quarters, you cross the small supplier threshold and must register for HST. You then charge 13% on taxable supplies, follow CRA place of supply rules, and claim Input Tax Credits (ITCs) on business purchases.

Filing frequency depends on revenue. Most small businesses file quarterly, and many use the Quick Method to simplify HST remittance. Missing your HST filing deadline triggers penalties and interest.

HST Exemptions

Not everything is subject to HST. Common exemptions: basic groceries, prescription medications, medical devices, residential rent, and most financial services. Childcare is also exempt.

If your business sells a mix of taxable and exempt items, accurate bookkeeping matters. It keeps your HST filing defensible if the CRA asks for backup.
